StudioLinkedVST has released Drum Pro, a freeware drum machine virtual instrument for Windows and Mac OS. The plugin is delivered free collection of 20 drum kits which can be expanded by purchasing commercial sound packs from StudioLinkedVST’s online sound shop.

Drum Pro’s user interface features 16 drum pads, an ADSR envelope for the volume (it’s a global envelope which affects all 16 drum pads), volume and pan controls for each drum pad, a reverb mix control and the global volume control. A potentially major drawback is the fact that Drum Pro doesn’t come with multi-out support, meaning that you won’t be able to process different drum sounds individually (stuff like applying different EQ settings to the kick and the snare is not possible in this case). On the other hand, if you’re looking for ultimate simplicity and a speedy workflow, this probably won’t bother you to much.

The plugin’s factory collection of 20 free drum kits can be further expanded by purchasing additional sound packs from StudioLinkedVST (the additional kits are priced at $9.99 on average). The free drum kits which are delivered with the plugin sound pretty good and they cover modern urban music genres such as hip hop and trap. Drum Pro’s factory sound set also features a nice little set of classic drum machine sounds such as the Roland TR-808 and BOSS DR-55. It’s worth noting that Drum Pro can’t be used as a sampler (it doesn’t load WAV files). It’s a rompler instrument which can be expanded by purchasing additional sound banks.

Another drawback is the fact that you can’t mix sounds from different kits – for example, you can’t use the Roland TR-808 snare with the Roland TR-909 clap. This limitation can be overcome by using multiple instances of the plugin on separate mixer tracks in your DAW. Same goes for the aforementioned multi-out limitation (for example, you could use one instance of Drum Pro for the kicks, another one for the snares, etc.).

Although I definitely prefer using a sampler instrument (Poise by One Small Clue is still my go-to drum sampler) and loading it up with my favorite drum samples, something like Drum Pro would definitely be useful to me in my early days of music production. It’s a decent drum rompler instrument with a nice selection of built-in drum sounds. If you’re a beginner producer or beat maker, using this type of instrument can certainly save you some time and give you quick access to a rather useful set of drum sounds.
